The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Society of Appraisers invites you on a narrated 1.5 hour boat tour of the Los Angeles Port, with information on International Trade and how that affects the port. Appropriate for all disciplines with focus on RP, MTS, and the economic future of Los Angeles. It’s known for record-setting cargo operations, groundbreaking environmental initiatives, progressive security measures, diverse recreational and educational facilities and the emerging LA Waterfront. The Port contributes to the economic future of the City of Los Angeles (“City”) and the State of California by ensuring that marine cargo and other water dependent economic uses are realized in the most efficient and effective manner possible. The Harbor Department is a proprietary department of the City of Los Angeles, more commonly known as the Port of Los Angeles (“Port”) and operates for the purpose of the promotion and accommodation of maritime commerce, navigation and fishery. ThePort is one of the state’s primary economic resources and an essential element of the national maritime industry. The American Society of Appraisers (ASA) will offer its popular marine survey course aboard the legendary Queen Mary, October 9-11, 2014. Once the grandest ocean liner in the world, the vessel now serves as a Long Beach hotel, historical landmark and entertainment venue. ASA’s popular ME208: Marine Survey course is an intermediate level course that addresses the topics of marine equipment and its special language, the marine industry and function of marine surveyors and appraisers, the three approaches to value as they apply to commercial and yacht appraisal, identification of marine equipment and systems, preparing a report and the different types of Bluewater and Brownwater equipment. It was written for the non-marine professional who wants basic knowledge and for the young marine professional who wants to learn more about the marine survey business and, particularly, marine asset appraisal. The course is growing into a must-attend for those in any specialty who want education hours and for those who want to increase their knowledge in an industry that has the interest of many investors.

Inside View of U.S. Tax Court with discussion on two Current Tax Court Cases (Estate of Diane Tanenblatt and the Estate of Helen P. Richmond.) The LA Chapter has brought together John A. Thomson, ASA, MAI and introducing Michael Perlmutter, Estate Tax Attorney with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to present a discussion around two current tax court cases. ARM204 - Appraisal Review and Management Overview
This course is the culmination of the required coursework for the AM and ASA designation of ARM. The class takes a close look at the various International Valuation Standards including USPAP, IVS, AICPA and their impact and importance in the Appraisal Review and Management Process. The course also looks at the Impact of the Basel Accord and the interaction amongst the International Regulatory bodies and the Appraisal community. The class presents numerous appraisal case studies covering Real Property, Machinery and Equipment, Business Valuation, Gems and Jewelry, Personal Property. This course is ideal for representatives of the Banking and Financial Industries, Domestic and International Regulatory Bodies including IRS, OCC, FDIC, OTC, the Federal Reserve Bank and the Appraisal Community at large who are involved in the Review and Management of complex multidisciplinary appraisal assignments. These parties are establishing the new rules for Appraisal Review and Management. This course provides a guide for managing the engagement and review process from origination through the underwriting process and collateralization This looks at the appraisal from both the appraisal engager as well as the appraiser’s perspective; it is a guide to assist in the process of understanding the needs of both parties of an appraisal engagement so that each ascertain the scope and depth of the appraisal is understood by both.
